Kops is methodically removing the last gossip-protocol cruft and tightening EC2 permissions to least-privilege, while minikube lays the foundation for multi-platform node provisioning.

The kops team shipped four breaking cleanups this cycle: gossip detection now lives solely in API validation [1], stale documentation is gone [2], EC2 describe permissions are scoped to actual consumers like GPU detection and kubelet MaxPods calculation [3], and protokube service calls have been stripped from hooks [4]. Meanwhile, minikube merged the NodeProvisioner interface refactor [5], which introduces a strategy pattern for node bootstrap and join logic, starting with linuxNodeProvisioner and setting the stage for Windows support without behavioral changes. On the infra side, the ci-kubernetes-cross-canary job moved from AKS to EKS after failing every run since July 21, with pods consistently SIGTERMed during peak disk-write phases of the release build [6]. Kubernetes website metrics documentation for 1.36 is now live [7], and local-volume-node-cleanup got bumped to v2.9.0 in the image promotion pipeline [8].
