Codex stabilizes the tool prefix across turns

By RepoJournal · Filed · About OpenAI · Composed from the cited sources · methodology

Five Codex merges target a single problem: what the model sees about its tools and environments should stop shifting underneath it mid-session.

Keep environment-backed tools exposed across readiness changes openai/codex

by copyberry

Environment readiness no longer changes which tools and command parameters get advertised to the model. Enabled command, patch, image, and permission tools stay exposed when environments are absent, starting, or failed, and the model gets a consistent wait message when nothing is executable.

Keep third-party tools deferred in strict Code Mode Only openai/codex

by copyberry

The new disabled-by-default code_mode_only_strict_3p_tools feature keeps eligible MCP, app, and client-supplied dynamic tools deferred under Code Mode Only, so the model's eager tool prefix survives MCP catalog changes between turns instead of being recalculated. Third-party exposure can no longer force schemas into the prefix or knock tools out of exec.

Decode Windows Terminal's mapped Shift+Enter sequence openai/codex

by copyberry

Windows Terminal sends Shift+Enter as ESC[13;2u split across individual console key events, which Codex now decodes as Shift+Enter so the mapping inserts a newline in the composer. Partial sequences wait on a fixed 50 ms deadline, and incomplete or mismatched input replays unchanged rather than being swallowed.

Preserve local Markdown link labels in the TUI openai/codex

by copyberry

Path-like Markdown link labels were being collapsed into their destinations, discarding the author's text. Local labels now render as label (target), including in tables, while empty or whitespace-only labels show the destination alone and unparseable local file URLs fall back to the original target.

Show model and reasoning effort near the top of task details openai/codex

by copyberry

Task details lead with model, reasoning effort, project, and usage before attention details, activity, and the last message, with reasoning effort shown as Unknown when it is unavailable. Long values truncate to one line.
