ARCH LINUX PURGES LEGACY 32-BIT MULTIMEDIA LIBS FROM MULTILIB
By RepoJournal · Filed · About Arch Linux
Antonio Rojas removed five obsolete 32-bit multimedia libraries from the multilib-x86_64 repository in a single sweep, signaling the end of support for aging FireWire and image processing codecs.
The multilib repository shed lib32-libavc1394, lib32-libiec61883, lib32-libraw1394, and lib32-libdv [1][2][4][5] in what appears to be a coordinated deprecation of FireWire-related and legacy video handling libraries. lib32-giflib followed the same path [3], removing GIF codec support from the 32-bit stack. These removals reflect Arch's ongoing cleanup of packages with dwindling real-world usage, particularly those tied to hardware interfaces (FireWire) that have largely disappeared from modern systems. The changes landed across 50 commits to the state repository, consolidating package management infrastructure without breaking shifts. Users relying on these libraries for legacy multimedia workflows should expect them to move to the AUR or discontinue entirely.
