Linux 7.3 rc cycle fixes cgroup kill, SMB corruption
By RepoJournal · composed from the cited sources · human-reviewed weekly · methodology
Five release candidates landed fixes for data corruption, use-after-frees, and secretmem accounting, while Omarchy 4.0.3 shipped its own security batch.
Merge tag 'cifs-fixes-7.3-rc2' of https://git.manguebit.org/linux torvalds/linux
The insert-range path copied overlapping chunks in the wrong direction, corrupting file data during fallocate, and the merge also covers collapse, zero, and punch hole. If you run SMB client mounts with range operations, this is the one to pull first.
Merge tag 'ksmbd-for-7.3-rc2' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/linkinjeon/smb torvalds/linux
The smb server fixes clear pipe compound padding and the response buffer to prevent unintended data exposure, and initialize fields that FS_OBJECT_ID_INFORMATION and FS_CO left unset. Server operators on 7.3 should treat this as a priority.
cgroup: fix spurious SIGKILL of CLONE_INTO_CGROUP children torvalds/linux
Since the fork path began snapshotting a child's future cgroup kill_seq, children created with CLONE_INTO_CGROUP could be SIGKILLed spuriously. Container runtimes that create processes directly into a cgroup are the affected path.
v4.0.3 basecamp/omarchy
Beyond the Hermes and Openclaw integration, the release carries a set of security fixes the Omarchy Security team validated and examined. Take it if you run Omarchy on a machine you care about.
4.5 archlinux/archinstall
The installer gains RT variants from upstream, aarch64 support for GRUB and Limine EFI installation, and the AArch64 root partition type GUID. The archiso workflow fix and its revert both landed and canceled each other out.
Merge tag 'edac_updates_for_v7.3_rc2' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/ras/ras torvalds/linux
Borislav Petkov's belated EDAC lineup marks the mpc85xx and ThunderX drivers orphaned for lack of active maintainers, alongside the AMD ATL and misc branches. Orphaned drivers keep working but lose a maintainer to route fixes through.
Merge tag 'hardening-v7.3-rc2' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/kees/linux torvalds/linux
Kees Cook's hardening branch defaults randstruct off when Rust is enabled, which the merge describes as being for better allmodconfig coverage. Build coverage, not runtime behavior, is what changes here.
